Prepositions of Place

Answer Key:

1) The clock is on the wall.

2) The ball is under/underneath/below the table.

3) The cat is to the right of/on the right side of/next to the armchair.

4) The table is to the left of/on the left side of/next to the armchair.

5) The carpet is on/on top of the floor.

6) The lamp is on/on top of the table.

7) The flowers are in the vase.

8) The table is between the chair and the armchair.

 

Bonus Sentences:

  • The rug is in front of the table.
  • The chair is behind the rug.
  • The clock is above the table.
  • The book is beside/next to the lamp.
  • I stand across from the class.

 

Remember:

  • Next to/Beside/To the side of- These all have the same meaning.
  • Above/On top of- These have slightly different meanings. For example, “The bird is above the school” means the bird is in the air. “The bird is on top of the school” means the bird has landed and is sitting on the school.


Giving Directions

Example:

Starting from home, going to the museum, and then ending at the restaurant.

First, you must travel/go straight on 2nd street. Then, you should turn onto Grand Avenue heading West. Once you reach 1st Street, turn left or turn to head South. After visiting the museum, you want to eat at the restaurant. First, you should turn right onto Grand Avenue heading East. You should go/travel straight on Grand Avenue until 3rd Street. Once you arrive at 3rd Street, turn left or turn to go North. The restaurant will be on the right side of 3rd Street between Main Street and Grand Avenue.
