Speaking IV: Mock Trial

28 May

Mock Trial can be quite complicated, so to best prepare for next week’s role play, here are some materials to help you.

  • This handout leads you through the basic process, step by step, of a mock trial. http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/blogs/learning/pdf/2010/20101004mocktrial.pdf
  • This PDF lists the basic roles of a mock trial. http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/lesson_images/lesson799/Roles.pdf  [The Bailiff calls witnesses to the stand, he/she also accepts evidence, and is responsible for safety and security.]

Finally, this is the case we will be enacting next week.

The judge should practice reading aloud the directions. The witnesses should be familiar with their statements. The lawyers should meet with the witnesses to prepare questions they will ask. They should also read about the different objections. Everybody should be familiar with the facts of the case and the rules of law.
